Desktop Publishing

Desktop publishing (abbreviated DTP) is the creation of documents on a personal computer using specialized software in digital form. This software can generate high quality text and images and it allows individuals, businesses, and any organization to print endless amounts of material. When used to its full potential, there are no limits to what desktop publishing will allow the user to produce at a reasonable rate.

DTP is used to arrange text and graphics for publications which can then be printed out such as

Flyers
Brochures
Posters
Business cards

Its Importance

Desktop Publishing is most often the last step in the localization process, which help create the presentation of the material and give the content its feel and format. When it comes to the localization process, desktop publishing is crucial as it look into the smallest detail of the material. It concentrates also on design, layout and typography and not just words.

Desktop Publishing software
It is a software (or tool) that DTS experts use to create content in the form of "communication". These communications can be in the form of hard copy communication such as manuals, brochures, business cards, etc. or even digital communications like webpages or any online publishing. Adobe, Corel, Quark, Serif, Microsoft and Nova Development are some of the main players in the development of DTP software.

Adobe- Makes software for designers like Photoshop, however these programs are not meant for page layout applications, but for print publishing. Adobes' desktop publishing software or page layout software applications are Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign and Adobe PageMaker.
